You know, the Teacher wasn't ENTIRELY wrong about "just being understood".

Conversational English is incredibly difficult to learn, especially because we keep breaking our own grammatical rules, and we use tons of idioms and colloquialisms.

The best way to start is just to be sure the message gets across, not being afraid to ask for language help, and just learning as you go.

This is how I teach conversational English to my students too; for me, it starts with confidence, to commit in your study, and to get yourself understood even if you have to use "Tarzan-speak".

English learners in my country often get ridiculed for not speaking it as fluently and correctly as a native speaker. But the kicker? Usually, the ridicule comes from those who cannot speak English, often adding "learn your own language first, idiot". I know this because I directly experienced this myself, and my students also said the same.
