And so Ayaka is still the gaslighter in the end but I get why mangaka didn't go the scorched earth with her; and I agree with what mosaku1256 said that it's for Kokone. Both parents probably agreed to keep Kokone's happiness in mind after the divorce.

What I don't get though is Masato getting scot-free with his revenge story of his and that pissed me off when reading this last chapter.

I know ayaka at the wrong side here and yeah i will kill her if it was me 💀 But when you realise it, she's just vulnerable woman after all... based on the dialog, maybe ayaka get abused at the young age, that's why she's pretend to be "Tough" with the "child mind" inside, so she's acting almighty but in wataru pov she's just throwing tantrum like a b*tch...
I just imagine how wataru and ayaka met, maybe at the beginning she's didn't notice/care about wataru at all, but as the time goes and with the moment they spent together, she's thinking wataru as her "cure' and she's so happy to met him (i mean he's loyal and brave, who didn't want him ? 😭), but after they married, wataru change because of the work (yeah he's still the same, but in ayaka pov, he's different person), his past just come out of nowhere, that's when masato get in... But imagine, if masato didn't get in, wataru just realise his mistake and got back as a man who ayaka always love, it will be DRAMATIC. Maybe at that story ayaka will crash out with his past and wataru try to save her, at the end ayaka who get cured just devoted her life to wataru until he die... imagine wataru has a lovely child and wife at that story... at this poin i will just made my own story 😭😭😭

nah we just want an actual form of justice. like say punitive damages, having her pay over half her bank account and stuff to him, have her pay child support until the kid is an adult, alimony if that could even apply in the reverse, etc. just the stuff that typically drives divorced fathers to suicide. that's all~!

I get everyone's sentiment here regarding Ayaka and Masato's punishment, and that there wasn't much comeuppance for them, but I'll say my two cents.

Despite how it was initially and whose POV it was told, this is all about custody of Kokone. Remember that everything that the dad did was for Kokone, her daughter. Yes, you can argue that husband was hurt due to the cheating, gaslighting and mental anguish that wife did, but he set it all aside for his daughter.

Guy could've managed to destroy Masahito and Ayaka's image by going scorched earth, but he didn't because he won't get the custody of his daughter that way. Back in the first chapters, when he was trying to get a lawyer, everyone was eager to represent him but once they learned it was for custody they backed out.

This story wasn't about revenge, it was about the hardships of all the fathers in the world to try get custody of their offspring. Even if the mother was the most horrible neglectful parent in the world, it's pretty easy for them to get custody. Compare that to the father, even if he already showed evidence of how a great and loveable dad he was to his daughter, it's still not enough.

Regarding Ayaka, sure you can say that the author was making excuses for her, but in reality this is a pretty common occurrence. She might've experienced postpartum, and that's why she felt that Kokone was taking MC away from her and found solace in another man. Now, again, this doesn't excuse her, it just gives reason. Reasons don't mean giving excuses. Author needed to show that despite everything that happened, cheating and then the divorce, Kokone still has her mother. Her punishment is that now that she has learned to love her daughter again, she has less time with her.

For Masahito, I can agree that there should've been some more punishment for him, but if we started the story with his perspective we might be a bit more sympathetic towards him. His reason is that he too was a victim, his mistake is that he directed that to the wrong person. He did redeem himself a bit, not fully maybe about 10% only, by helping MC to win the custody with that recording.

TLDR: Story is not about revenge, but a custody battle. Reasons given for Ayaka and Masahito don't redeem them, but only tell their motive.

All this would have been solved if she just, you know, commuicated to him when he was work focused. If he didn't change she would have just divorced him and kept the child too. Her playing victim rn when she didn't even attempt that leaves a very bitter taste

Good binge read! Thank you for the translation! Definitely got into the story the most with the 3 girls showing up, and the red herring with Yaotome. Really liked seeing the MC's strengths as reporter but also his reasonable weakness of getting emotional at times, very human portrayal of someone going through this situation. Definitely would've liked to see more characters expanded. Two for me especially were the lawyer, since we only see one flashback with no words about his motivation for taking up Okatani's case, and Okatani's dad, since he straight up disappears after the hospital scene. Lots of stuff to expand upon but still ended with a satisfying conclusio Really liked the art too. Hope to see a translation of Case 2 and more from this author/ artist!
