I don't know about other places, but in my town bass players are always the last thing to come because everyone wants to play guitar/drums or sing first, lmao. When I told everyone I played bass, they looked at me like I was a dinosaur come to life.

I remember a quote from the loading screens on guitar hero:

Your bass is too loud, I can hear it
Lots of rock bands just look down on the bass even though it's still really important. It's just not as cool as playing lead guitar.

Also add the stereotype that the bass guitar is primitive and therefore it is played either by musicians with minimal skills, or by those who want to get into a group at any cost. For example, the legendary “of course the chick in the band plays bass guitar.”

It's a shame cuz much like an orchestral bass/cello the bass guitar has a foundational role in the music's quality and tone even when its played so smoothly that you can't distinguish it. Letting the bass player show off a bit is always a treat too.

I do admit I like drums the most though but Im a drum & bass fan its a good genre.

Edit: I wanted to elaborate a bit. I played cello in high school and was tutored by an amazing cellist. He performed as part of an orchestra for a play of south pacific. I tried really hard to listen for it and when I mentioned that to him he said "if you heard it I was playing too loud my part is not supposed to be heard" even though cello's can have solo or melodious roles the job that time was to compliment the emotive violins for the high energy romantic comedy.
