I’m a bit confused about why the word “attracts” is used even though it’s expanded into an explanation that the opposite happens and people find themselves far from the shop? What. The ten minute thing was confusing too.

Yeah, using the word "attract" makes no sense, since the opposite is happening if the bookstore is forcing people out after 10ish minutes. "Repel" should be used.
