If each gold coin weighs about as much as a quarter, they'd be about $250 each, which would make 40,000 about $10,000,000. I'm no expert on hiring mercenaries but that doesn't seem ridiculous for hiring what looks like ~60 soldiers and some light vehicles for a day of very heavy combat.

Really, ammo is probably going to be the killer.

Just FYI, outfits like Triad Securities and Blackwater (or whatever they're calling themselves now), are overwhelmingly made up of US military vets.

Mercenary Private Security firms don't like hiring guys with absolutely no training, or those who couldn't actually make it in the service, because either A) they spend money training the civilian, or B) they have to deal with whatever disqualified the guy from military service.

I should also mention that a good number of these combat vets have some form of PTSD. They don't go back to war cause they like it, they go back cause they can't come home.

Got a buddy who was doing a security guard cert course with me. Was an Army sniper. Fucking on pills all the time cause anything can set him off. Going to the range for pistol cert was rough on him; jumpy as hell, always on a swivel, had to keep reminding himself that it wasn't Iraq. Heard later that Blackwater signed him up for something like $75k bonus.

Yeah not all mercs are for greed and gold. There's definitely more than a few, but a good chunk are there cause what are they going to do in normal society with skills to murder 10 guys in their sleep, snipe targets over the horizon, clear a building of hostiles and reflexes that can kill someone trying to pat you on the back?

They fucking turn you into a killing machine, but they don't try to turn you back. They send you to where death from a mortar, or IED, or little kids with guns, but they don't try to fix you when you're out.

"Good job, serving the nation. Now get out of here and rejoin your family that have no idea what you went through, gung-ho assholes ask about killing all the time and bleeding hearts call you a mass murderer."

Well, from what you said, they can't re-enter society, have been abandoned by their governments and are doing the thing they are best at... for money.

There's 3 types of mercenaries in the modern world.
- Crazy killing machines that should be medically helped instead of sent to a battlefield.
- People who were left with no money, no "normal" skills and no future by a society that broke them and threw them like toys.
- People that want money for their exceptional skills. More money than what governments think is OK.

In the first case, that guy would probably get fired from that private army fairly quickly. They don't usually like crazy murderers.
The other two cases, they either NEED the money, for their family or to survive... or they WANT the money. Just point something to defend or attack, and they'll do so for a predetermined amount. And those group usually don't take prisoners.

Now, I don't think it's crazy to think that these guys... on a medieval battlefield... against normal human and monsters...
They definitely are going to massacre every last enemy.

PS: I don't judge US ex-military guys checking the private sector for a job (usually even better paid than the "official" military). I find it logical. Maybe if the US started caring humanly for its active military and vets, this wouldn't have to happen.

@IMACOP From googling if they are only 60 people( shown in the image of them lined up) she is overpaying if they are only going to work for a few days just mowing down the incoming army.

She could probably hire them an entire year or more with the amount shes paying.

Love the fact that she does not let firearms loose on the new world. This is a somehow fireproof way of using militar technology without scarring the normal development.
Thanks for the chapter.
