The author is quite flexible in property ownership. For a story that is about buying and selling, certainly ownership of property matters. The gear on those dead soldiers typically belongs to the organization or next of kin. But the MC will rob the corpses as long as he can get away with it. Grave robbing is okay in stories, so of course the MC reaches for anything that looks valuable.
