Usually it's just hiragana put above kanji for people that can't read the kanji but in some cases it's used differently. In this case the author uses it to write simplistic descriptions of what the "thing" is. It's fine if you're just reading it but it's a pain in the ass to translate because usually that space would be used for the actual name of the "thing" so I have to translate the kanji instead which leads to stuff like "devil dragon princess".
