Thinking about it I almost wonder if dad trained him in case something like this happened with his whole starting with almost nothing and learning to work with basically society's rejects in case he needs to do something. I might also be influenced by reading this with Lady Snowblood though lol

since the dad was familiar with spycraft and work as an intelligence agent/deep cover, this actually makes a lot of sense…I’m sure he also wanted to make Ryuu into a more serious person who understood the worth of money, but I like the idea that it was a way to give him spycraft skills and the capacity to blend in and make do with nothing without it being too obvious.

also, I love how the officer’s hateful sneer is drawn on pg. 19. it’s a difficult emotion to capture
