Kind of the drifter to scare the boys with his curse so they burn his books. Not like he could explain easily why having communist literature is dangerous if the other villagers ever find out, so his curse is sufficient scare.
Kind of a cruel irony that because of this, the boys don't understand the true nature of the danger, and Masan trying to honor his wish in front of others ended up with his doom.
