I use they all the time. It's actually really good to use when you can't easily discern a persons gender. That's not even talking about if they are or aren't trans. Just some girls look that masculine and some guys look that feminine. They is a wonderful catch all in my opinion because the English language is stupid and lacks a pronoun that can be used regardless of gender or at least none springs immediately to mind.
