Imagine the kraken dropped some kind of energy core material and he installed that on the ghost ship after capturing it. Combined power of kraken and ghost ship would be nuts especially due to the hostile relationship between the ship and it's killer. The resulting abomination of a vessel would be a berserk one. It could easily slap flying dutchman from PoTC.

It did seem a bit goofy to me that they were so unwilling to pick up the weapon (with even the party members talking about it being unusable). IIRC, Gaile himself isn't loaded up on curse resistance, he's just really good at making things that offset curse effects. So anyone should be able to wield that sword (like anyone could wield the ring he gave the princess), so long as it wasn't being offset by another cursed item he happened to be wearing.
