even if it's exaggerated, Japan's conviction rate (I think that's the term, % of people that get detained that end up in jail or at least "proven" to have done something ilegal) is iirc 99% (at least above 90%, not quite sure of the specific number.) It's that high because they think, "if you were detained and now are on a trial, you must have done something wrong. You did something wrong, so you will go to jail." They are biased towards the people that get detained, so they will force you to "confess" even if you didn't do anything wrong.
