You know, I would like to think that he could have helped her out and maybe become her guardian. At least be able to kill her parent's social life and get them in jail... but how would he explain the police, that she wasn't kidnapped, but ran away? How would he explain how he knew she ran away? If he said he was her stalker, would they not think he was the kidnapper? The scars on her body would only make things worse.
If the detective had gotten to know her around this time, he could have helped her out. Even if it was just a kind stranger it would have worked out. But it didn't, so here we are.

I don't think he actually wanted to help her (unless it changes later in the story), he just did this for himself.

Hmmm I think she really would've had trouble drowning like this, unless her self preserving instincts really got that numbed down by her past everyday life.
Either way, it seems like her mood has slightly improved since their cohabitation so I guess it was good he interfered, for whatever reasons he had. Sometimes the outcome matters more than the intention...
