They handle it better in the LN than in the manga, yes. Everything happens linear, except the bit about Kano at the end is a flashback. They just want to show Kano buying a mask, for events they will show soon.

There's two plots going on, the struggle of the total magic stones team with Kaoru as protagonist and Souta's task.
The manga switches between those two often.
In the light novel, the author decides to finish Souta's plot first before Kaoru's.

From here until raws latest, MC literally keep doing this spineless doormat bit till the end, he rather bow down and kiss the floor instead stand his ground EVEN knowing he can wipe the floor to all the 3 person he bowed down too, one of the comment remarks saying MC doing it cuz he dont want to derail the plot/story too much, but thats BS, the story already derailed the moment he didnt harass his FMC, didnt get expelled, and end up in one of the top class

basically the manga gonna keep up the bit of "only the reader know how strong and OP MC is" and to watch such person who LITERALLY beat S rank monster and high rank adventurer not ONCE, but THRICE, is really head aching pain in the butt to read over and over and OVER to watch him -

"||One scene, MC is about to engage to show how he can fight and defend himself and finally show his true color, a badass confrontation battle is about to occur, MC looking like he's entering a battle pose facing his opponent that about to jump him||" but next page/chapter show him raising his hand, bend his knee, and bow down humiliating himself in the worse way possible, and BEG to be forgiven and play the weakling bit , and he's gonna repeat this ALOT of time, holey shit its just pissing me off to type it too"

basically all the raws comment and including me already get tired of it cuz either author or artist both overused it and plan to keep using it and stretch the plot longer

Yeah, I also think MC should focus more about gaining strength than other things. There are too many variables to count, the most important thing he need is power but he keep neglecting his growth.

If MC was more ruthless, he should just kill the playboy fuxker. What that bastard did make the future change course and affect them all anyway.

That's pretty much it. He acts maybe once every 100 chapters or so. Every other time, he spends his time outside acting like a bitch. Even after some happenings make it pretty obvious that story is nowhere near what its suppose to be anymore so that excuse is out as well.

It's one of the most used isekai tropes (hiding my power and acting like a mob) but this one takes it to another level. He has zero pride and pretty boring to read about as well since he acts like a robot.

I don't think you understand...

Everyone else ends up knowing he's strong, even Tachigi who's in Kaoru's group, the only one who doesn't know is Kaoru herself.
So the whole drama about him hiding his strength only works on other players like Tsukishima and Kaoru. Everyone else ends up knowing the truth as the plot progresses.
In this arc he ends up having to show up his strength to Kuga and Tenma-san who later invites him to form up a party. So Souta ends up forming a party with Tenma-san and Kuga, Risa and Satsuki ends up joining too. Tachigi learns about his strength because the President of the Student Council ends up calling Souta too often, who made him suspicious of him.
And the fact that Risa who's the most intelligent in class is always with Souta he believes Souta must be very strong otherwise Risa would not give him the time of the day.
Also despite the MC not wanting to change the plot or do anything that can alter the storyline the unexpected always happens, and he ends up having to take the role of a hero, so in the end it's not a big problem.
