Now that I am up to date with this, I am really enjoying it. When the writing is this good, I don't mind the harem aspect. What I hate is when a poorly written harem, made up of a bunch of "off the peg" ....deres and the MC is so dense that he doesn't even pick up on the fact that a bunch of girls are throwing themselves at him. Here, he is building solid relationships with multiple girls and is earnest with them. They are not throwing themselves at him and he is not oblivious to what these girls offer. Will any of them lead to romantic feelings on either side? Will he ever feel he is good enough for Hinako? Personally Shizune is top girl. She is the one running the whole shooting match and keeping the madhouse under control. Plus the fact that she is a bad-ass fighter is attractive too.

I can kinda see it, like you say, physically, but even when it comes to wardrobe design, I associate Mahiru with really conservative high necks and long skirts. And their personalities are almost perfect opposites, in a way, where Shiina actually does have her shit together and that's kinda her whole reason to be in the story, whereas Hinako's deal hinges on her being a privately squishy and expressive girlfailure.

Hinako's deadpan feels like it hides a sigh, whereas Mahiru I always felt was a thin veneer of blunted affect over a writhing ball of neuroses. Sweet kid, don't get me wrong. But Hinako's appeal to me at least is the childishness Mahiru Shiina had to discard.
