because the kingdom wants to enslave the elves to make money not spend money buy potions which they aint gonna sell because they have military value

again your version would end with a mc thats in breach of contract outsting him from being the good guy a reduced elf population, mentaly scarred elves and quite possibly a burned down village

unless a traveling merchant that luckyly carries 50000g appears in what is more or less a war zone

@Roadrunner9000 why paying with goods would be a breach of contract? They just need to have enough value to pay the debt, which they would as he can ask the price he wants for it. Their interest on said potions would be bigger than the interest on elves as they'd have more chances to screw with them after but not many chances to get said potions.

Why would he not be the good guy and their saviour with that?

"My version" is just not a flawled plothole that only works because the author wanted it to even if it makes no sense on an actual market setting. Again, not that it matters as
