The dad's redemption was a nice touch.

Was the dad really redeemed? He basically ignored his special needs kid his whole life, told him nothing, and shunted him off to be someone else's responsibility. He also let his other kids ignore and bully him with no recourse.

The only good thing he did was send him somewhere that will ideally teach him better than the actual military. He still completely neglected to even try teaching him morals or integrity himself, or really take care of him beyond the basics.
