I read this about two years ago back on anymanga.com, which was turned over to bato.to, which ain't around anymore. As a former Marine and an elderly romantic, it was one of the most nostalgic and heart-rending things I had read in quite a while. It was very similar to Ai-Ren, a real favourite of mine, and was even more into the nitty-gritty of the nastiness of warfare. The psychological drama was extremely well done, and what the author tells us about ourselves as a species was pretty heavy. Like Twain's "Huckleberry Finn," I need to read this about every two years to keep my moral compass aligned.

@Comadrin

I agree, especially with having to come back to this series after a while.

Something about is so irreplaceable, I’ve yet to find anything to precisely captures the feeling it gives off, and find myself wanting to go through all of the pain and bitter sweetness all over again from time to time, and I usually never reread manga.

I’m not with the excessive praise below, but it’s strange to me that this has a score under 9. It’s one of the best manga.

I read this over a few years ago and i still look fondly towards it to this day. I'd Give it a light 9 (9.3), i could go in to Details but if i do ill end up writing a 3 page review, so ill give the quickie on it. the emotions that these characters convey are so real in context of the story; that you can feel those emotion yourself when your reading it. that's probably the thing i like about it the most. The art complements and enhances the story, and is just wonderful in its own right. The dialogue and interactions and inner monologues of the characters feel so real; that they have more dimensions to them then peopole I've know for years IMO this is a classic and is a MUST read!

I read this ages ago and yeah, it IS a good manga but it just has a sad and depressing feeling from start to end. If you don't want that empty, hole in your heart feeling, I wouldn't recommend you read this. From what I remember, the creator also made a one-shot spin off set in the world of this manga and its also equally depressing.
