Even back in 2007, this series was already about superpower (The first real full-blown superpower fight was during regional finals with Saki and Amae)

As if Teru didn't already explain to Saki(in a flashback) that Rinshan Kaihou means flowers blooming on top of a mountain.

kudos to whomever mentioned the meaning of Saki's name in the comments recently; looks like the manga remembers too ;)

But it was meant to be rare, and very ambiguous. Like, Nodoka outright disbelieved it, commentator woman pointed out how statically unlikely the results were (instead of attributing them to some special power), etc. Now everyone's just "yeah that's their power, of course it works that way". There's clearly been a shift since.

After match after match of superhuman, otherworldly powers, those four are really just going to have to sit down and play a normal ass game of mahjong lol

It exists but isn't used much, I think riichi city has it tho?
wow, i didn't know rinchan pao works like that

Some rulesets impose a liability payment, called sekinin barai or pao, on the discarder of a kanned tile in the event of a rinshan kaihou win.

If this rule is in effect: when a player calls an open kan, the discarder is liable for payments until the end of the caller's turn. If the caller wins with the immediate rinshan, payments occur as if the discarder was ronned. If the caller makes further kans, the discarder would still be liable until the caller discards a tile.
