If that dragon had led its wyvern troops from the front, that is, had participated in the attack from the beginning, the demon/demi-human fortress would have fallen. Instead it sent all of the wyverns in first and didn't personally move before it had completely run out of grunts. That decision was its downfall. If it was worried about any demon aces being present, it could have withhold a little bit before joining the fight.
