I wonder if any manufacturer ever made a set of pieces in the shape of what they represent (like in chess), not merely marking identical pieces with Chinese characters. It's not like anyone couldn't learn to separate them based on the Chinese character, even without knowing how to read Chinese, but I think the shapes of the chess pieces look more interesting. Just try to picture, in your mind, a chess set where every piece has the exact same, simple shape, and then merely has the name printed on it in Latin letters. It wouldn't be fancy at all. Rather it would look like something you might make extempore, out of wood, when camping in a forest and suddenly wanting to play chess with a friend of yours. So, you would just chop pieces of wood and use a pen to mark them until you got the full set.
