I am baffled both by the people who think that copout ending was any good and the people who think this series that spends a good third of its runtime focusing on the relationship between the male and female lead should not have the romance tag.

As for the series itself, the concepts are great but the execution is middling. I think the author should've committed into being a serious story exploring the psychological horror and drama sides, or a lighthearted story that committed to being a fluffy harem romcom with a horror theming. As it stands, it doesn't commit well to either and leaves both crowds hanging.

Im not really sure how to feel about this ending, to be honest, i wasnt really feeling the very last few chapters, the quality and pacing began to die down when Rea lost her memories of Furuya, everything that was built up from before that point had been tossed aside in favor of more drama, open endings have never been in par with my taste, so i wasnt surprised with my feelings on how it ended, genuine wasted potential.

This could also just be me who feels this way, but the ending reminds me of how i felt when i finished Persona 5 for the first time, i think having Rea unfortunately die would have done the ending some favors, Rea got to live her remaining life as a “normal girl” and maybe even start a relationship with Furuya, then the decomposing phase begins to catch up to her, where finally her time comes and Furuya is faced with the hard reality of learning to let Rea rest, serving as a life message of acceptance, and learning to let go. Idk maybe its just me who feel this way, not every ending needs to be left on a happy note, sometimes the best stories are ended with tragedy.

Also, the non-canon “what if” story is just out right stupid, and honestly a bit sad, in a way it gives off so many implications of what the aftermath is, do Rea and Furuya not end up together, who did she refer to by “Grandmother” and whatever happened with Rea that she ended up as a “spirit”/legend, weird way to end the series, though enjoyable it finished off in an underwhelming fashion.
