Both the literal meaning and the many contextually variable figurative connotations - well, the one(s) actually applicable to the specific context - are meant when the phrase is used. It's also supposed to cleanse envy from the utterer's word and heart as ward off the malign power of the "evil eye".

Thought it was Insha'Allah but turned out Masha'Allah could be used that way too? This is new knowledge for me!

@Easley Insha'Allah means " if god will's it" as in after meeting someone you haven't seen in a while and they say "will we meet again soon?" You can answer Insha'Allah, implying "maybe, jf god doesn't put too much hardship in our lives"

It's also being used a lot with parents that don't want to deal with their children's nagging, like "mommy can you buy me this chocolate?" Saying Incha'Allah would imply a "maybe" but in reality it just means "no".


Also Mash'Allah can also be used in a sarcastic way. Usually they add a few more arabic sentence to drive the point.

I thought masya'allah meant something along the line of 'all praise goes to god.' I was taught to use when you praise someone or something, or when you're bragging lol. It's important to use it to protect oneself from jealousy.
Insya'allah means 'if god wills it' so you use it when you make plans or when you want something to happen in the future. For example, "I'm going to work hard and get a full score on the test, insya'allah."
