... Which Arabic dub did the author watch? Because I distinctly remember the one that I watched in the 90s / early 2000s, and it had no trouble with using the Arabic word for "evolve"; I believe it's because the same word is used to mean "to develop", and the whole thing seemed akin to a flashy version of the biological process of metamorphosis.

You're thinking about Pokémon which used the word evolution and created huge backlash, a few years later when Digimon first aired they had to change it into "calling a friend" to avoid the same backlash.
