@Mogima: Ohohoho, terrorists are probably among the tamest kind of "hypocrites" in this context. The kind that had the Arabic term for "hypocrite" earn its religious connotation in Islam were those who lived among actual Muslims in Medina and pretended to be like them, but not only did they not practice Islam's tenets whenever they were away from the eyes of true Muslims, they constantly spouted veiled insults towards the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and actively tried to sabotage Islamic society and even betray it on some occasions to the idol worshippers of Mecca at every possible opportunity out of nothing more than petty malice.

Like, try to imagine an American citizen who in public loudly proclaims that he's the most patriotic of patriots and wears the US flag with pride... but when in the privacy of his home or his preferred clique of associates, he immediately throws the flag down on the ground, spits on it and tramples it with his feet, and sings praises of Vladmir Putin and the Russian Federation as he compiles the latest confidential info that he gathered through his privileged position in the federal government to present to the Russian spy that he is in semi-regular contact with. That's essentially what a "munafiq" is: One of the worst kinds, if not the worst kind of traitor.

The Wikipedia article on the "Munifiqun" in question.

@Mogima: From what I gathered, most of the rank and file of self-proclaimed Muslim terrorists are actually true believers in their group's malign creed to some extent or the other, even if their leaders may be non-believers who have ulterior motives (case in point: Daesh/ISIS's founders are former Iraqi Ba'athists out for revenge).

I am probably misremembering this, but don't Muslims go "incognito" in different societies to further Islam? Or at least not openly Muslim in non-Muslim states (such as the Russian Empire or the Austrian occupation of Bosnia).

@Uvenam: Hiding the fact that you're Muslim to avoid a real threat on your life and/or well-being or that of your family from the surrounding community is explicitly permissible, even if it requires you to say blasphemous things to "prove" it. Whether this requires the Muslim to atone afterwards is probably the subject of debate between the various schools (I haven't looked into it).
