before anyone else gets annoyed that Chris won, hear me out:

1. This is a school-level competition (even if its an exhibition battle), not a death battle, so the rules are different, and it's not uncommon for the weaker character to win because it's not about who's stronger but who can achieve the winning condition first (aka lighting up the 3 crystals)

2. Unlike Lenia, Chris is a human... that means Dran won't be using his dragon powers against her, in fairness and in accordance with how he wants to live as a human. You see both of them pulling out quite an arsenal of spells as well as a display of physical prowess, so it's not like he actually went easy on her.

3. Under these conditions not that unthinkable for Chris to win, even if Dran is like OP God-tier existence, when Chris, herself is quite extraordinary. iirc even if Lenia is basically known as the embodiment of destruction, Chris is hailed as the strongest person in the school.
(part of why she has this much power will be explained in the next chapter)

4. Even if Dran purposefully let her win, it's not because "I pity you" or "you're my friend" or the deceptive "look, you're actually strong"... Don't forget, there is still Semuto in the mix, there is a lot of feelings---regret, guilt, fear, etc.---the focus isn't the win or lose, it's the heart-to-heart that supposedly happens when you cross swords sincerely. Not to mention, there is nothing in it for either of them that relies on the outcome of the battle.

I agree with all these points. Dran's not in the tournament fighting to survive, and he's not fighting to kill. He's fighting to build the life he wants.
