Realistically there probably wouldn't be any problem with Ed drinking alcohol in a society like this, but unfortunately censorship laws must be followed to be published. I really don't like censorship.

Yeah, drinking age in manga always follow Japanese law. Same for all other Asian series I've seen (which mainly is just Chinese and Korean). And this is even drinking "at home", which in many countries isn't age restricted as long as it's under parental supervision. It gets the most ridiculous when the characters who're not allowed to drink are also working as soldiers or other types of professions involving killing people, because that's somehow okay.
