"Ciro" was just the metaphorical neon sign with 20 feet tall letters, but there's been plenty indications that something was afoot: the abundant and deliberate use of gender neutral nouns and pronouns, the fact that candidates are ALMOST always women, the insistence on candidates vs saintess, the fact that the topic has been abundantly discussed in the comments since chapter 2...What about "Yuri", is it a man's name or a woman? If you ask a Russian, they would probably say it's a man's name, but if you ask a Japanese, they would probably say it's a woman's name How about "Chris", or maybe "Aulia".
My point is, a name that is maybe in some places is considered a man's name, might be a woman's name in other part of the world. Or maybe that name is so rarely heard outside of say, Italy, that most people that don't know "Ciro" is a man's name, will get blindsided by this revelation. So it's not really a surprising thing.
However, since there are people that still call Ciro "her" and thought that the bracelet still had charges after, well, clearly NOT reading the chapter, I can see how they may have missed it.
