I'll disagree, he lived through nothing but hate and abuse throughout his entire life. The proof that he is a decent person is in the fact he hasn't lashed out more so far. Did he commit a crime and acted as a dick? Yes. But would he do better under different circumstances? Manga has already told me that the answer is a resounding Yes.

Anyone wishing him unwell should probably walk in his shoes a mile.

Sure, this story is made-up. However, I've recently seen a story of a real-life modern Nazi, with swastikas tattooed and whatnot, whose entire life was permeated with nothing but hate and abuse. However, after prison he met a person who reached out to him. His parole officer, a beautiful black lady. Eventually they married and he led a very different life since. So, was he born evil or did his surroundings turned him in to one?

One's circumstances doesn't excuse their actions. What he did was a crime that, if this was real life, would have him locked up if he wasn't rich. And now he's trying to be a homewrecker. Saying he'd be different under different circumstances is just wishful thinking and making excuses.

Also your anecdote can be countered by any other anecdote explaining the opposite. I've seen people who grew up in good homes and be the worst type of person imaginable. Whether that be a woman who grew up with both parents and was well off turned into a prostitute despite having college paid for or a young man killing his parents and being a total selfish piece of shit despite his parents doing everything to give him a good life.

And if you'd actually reread the story and what you wrote yourself you'd see that my anecdotal case fits this guy more. He been abused his entire life. Starved for normalcy he tries to rob a different person of it and fails. I said so above, it was a crime. However to correct his behavior he needed a helping hand and not a prison cell. And now that there is more chapters I see that I stand correct.

To your examples, they clearly portray bad people in good circumstances which the protagonist of this story is not. In my example, the guy grew with people abusing him since childhood and he learned more of the same behavior from them and overcame it with help from a person who reached out to him.

Now with 8 chapters of the story, it is clear that help worked and I am slightly hopeful for a good end.
