...I suppose the author couldn't bring himself to do something more drastic than "he threatens to kill himself". And even then it feels so deflated with how it ended up working - makes sense I guess, with how much of a freak his mother was, that she would capitulate to a suicide threat while knowing her son-turned-daughter wouldn't be vying for the man she's obsessed with.
