The chapters have thousands of views and usually a decent amount of comments as well. This seems to be at least moderately popular. I occasionally see people calling series underrated and how they deserve to be more popular, but I've never quite grasped how they make the judgement and what numbers it's based on.

Well, as for me. it's not about amount of reading that makes it popular, but it's about amount of people talking about it on outside of circle which makes it popular.

If it has some talk about it in some site that doesn't relate exclusively for that manga, it's popular.

It's like fanarts, references.. or even talking about plot itself.

Well, this is just my definition about popular, though.

Sorry if that makes you more confusing, Explaining isn't my thing and my logic is kind of weird too, I guess?

No, on the contrary, I now get your point much better. Especially since you mentioned fanart. That's most certainly a strong sign of popularity, although it usually takes an anime for a series to really start to get fanartist interested.

@Borderline, @Kaarme Now, to be fair, I can understand the lack of fanart - this manga's art isn't anything to write home about. Given it's been a while since this manga finished, I also don't see an anime adaptation happening ever. Strangely enough, Futami-sensei's other manga, Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii desu kara, actually did get an adaptation.
