Just once, I'd like to see a scene where they say "demonstrate the magic you know" and don't immediately jump into a mock battle. Like, lifestyle magic, nature magic, etc would all work to demonstrate skill without possibly hurting someone nearby or the kid by overexertion.
But this elf immediately realizing she fricked up was also quite fun, since the mc usually does take the "full power" so literally.

Pigments absorb light, that's why they have subtractive coloring.
Magic (except for maybe black) EMIT light, and not absorb, or you would NOT see it.
