@lenovoaxioo on old time, the standard of knowledge is pretty low, its normal for even an adult to not know how to write, read, and do calculations. Not to mention her teacher is a noble (who expected to govern and lead in the future), so her basic knowledge is actually pretty advanced.
Considering that there's no scene where her other friends in the village having trouble with the lesson. . . I presume if they do have money they can enter the academy just fine too right

Actually there is a scene about that, when Elizabeth ask a bit of advanced math, Maria is the only one who raise her hand. After Elizabeth said that Maria already managed to absorb all of her knowledge.

in one teacher rooms, they typically teach different things to different age/skill groups. its not that they kept up, its that they were doing different stuff.
