This is late as hell and you have probably figured it out but I think it's because they thought they made the other person hate them + they think they won't be friends anymore after the break-up which is true in some relationships.
I think that's how it is anyways.

Makoto felt compelled to go out with Ryuji because it seemed like the only way to not lose him. It was forced -- although it wasn't either of their intentions for it to go down that way. Eventually Makoto realized that their feelings for Ryuji weren't love and couldn't become love.

Meanwhile, Makoto had been feeling tinges of something whenever thinking of Aoi for a while now, including during the relationship with Ryuji. Makoto is only now starting to become aware of what those feelings are. (and uhh... The commenters on MD as well, I've noticed... srsly was legit a bit painful seeing everyone jump the gun getting so excited for a relationship where the writing was on the wall practically from the start..)
