Yeah, she died due to a traffic accident (got hit by a car while crossing the road) when Rena/Kaede was in the 5th grade of elementary school.

That was the mom saying it btw, not the sister. You can see Momiji was just slightly bigger than her just b4 the explanation, while during the explanation of the clips, the mom was the one next to her to showcase the color.
