Can we just appreciate they didn’t make this a harem. That blonde would’ve been in love with the MC in 99.9% of other mangas.

But by having a friend be the love interest, everything is wholesome there is no drama, and you can just enjoy yourself. It’s great.

I've read multiple Manga with side couples like this instead of having a love interest, you're just finding the wrong ones! Hell one of the Manga I've read I honestly enjoyed the side couple more than the main couple lol

Pre-2018 (7 years ago) Yes it was very common to have side couples. You’d have tons of fun characters with distinct personalities. Then Covid happened and that amount of effort kind of just went away for the most part.

Most current examples of romcoms w/ fleshed out characters are mangas that were “Grandfathered” in from pre-2018

Ah that might be the case I'm not sure. Side couples are so much better than competing love interests
