That was disappointing, I was expecting a twist where the fairy's judging criteria is unusual, like for the handsome guy transform task, they prefer a handsome fairy, not a human, or the fairy's judging people on the 'beauty'/creativity of their magic rather than pure skill. Resulting in D class winning often due to luck (Like failed magic creating unexpected result, that matches what fairy's want) or realizing the true criteria. Though I guess there still a chance the author use it for final few challenges.

Class D seems to have some secret sauce to them. There's a reason they're able to become evil mages that destroy the entire kingdom, with the black star eye stuff. I feel like it's some sort of bloodline thing, idk.

Maron's transformation was undoubtedly a great delivery. To have her have her dad as the one she looks up to is a very good look from the author in the mind of a girl that age in that setting, one that I don't remember anyone who took guesses before mentioning.

Disappointed that Miiko didn't transform in anyone at all though, so much "romantic" shenaningans possibilities lost.

I don't expect class D to instantly crush people, but considering Caitlin got dead last, I wonder what the chances are of there being fairy meddling here, like giving class D a harder statue or something. Fairies are nothing if not mischevious, after all, so if they were made aware of the wager I could see them tweaking things just to see what'd happen.

Like yeah, they're dropouts, but they're also dropouts with the potential to become calamity-level mages in the future. With stuff like Miiko's transformation, that's a bit more nuanced and it's not surprising she still usually sucks before she finds out what makes it "click", but I'd expect a "power above all" type to at least be able to beat C class or something.

Everyone in Class D sucks at magic and then Mr. Profession-Government-Assassin Ibuki comes in and wipes the floor. The next arc is about Solo dealing with the fact that everyone wants to transfer him into Class S, and it ends with half the cast dying. As Miiko holds the dying Ibuki in her arms, she curses the fairies whose "cup" brought them to this.

Then Ibuki stands back up and starts crossdressing, because this is Kobayashi Kina we're talking about. Honestly, I'm surprised that this shape-shifting magic is the closest we've got to crossdressing. Like, that must've took some restraint.
