Hayafuji’s “backstory” is so reductive. I still enjoy this manga and think it portrayed interesting perspectives. We must remember that not every story has a protagonist to root for, every character should have flaws and not every character is redeemable.
That said, Hayafuji’s character is wat too shallow. His mother excusing her abuse makes him lose respect for women? OK. But the “they talk?”, “They’re human?”, “what do I do now?” stuff was a bit much. Let’s him off the hook too easily—as if he doesn’t have agency in his deplorable acts.
