The executed had the easy way out. They didn't have to live with the memory of what those they abandoned looked like after the nazis were done with them.

Man ... that was brutal.... The fact that the deserter smiled is really haunting. If he showed a face of horror, she might felt that he deserve it. However, that one smile changed everything. It's as if showing he is now free, while our source is still bound to the horror of the war, and the horror of killing others even for the sake of military discipline.
