A specific manga comes to mind in relation to this, a drama from the 2010's. Though I can't link it in this specific case without spoiling it completely and I'm not about that. Maybe you've already read it and that's why you had the thought?

Anyways, I wouldn't mind if the artist is making another go at that concept, but the art is a lot weaker when directly compared. We'll have to see, some chance we're all giving the author too much credit anyways.

This is where I'm at too. I came for the old fashioned japanese degeneracy, but by chapter 2 I started getting the feeling that the mangaka was setting something up, and now I'm incredibly intrigued. Seems like it's shaping up to be one of "those" manga. A comic with a jacked up premise and execution, but once you get your foot in the door, it turns out the author actually has something to say.
