I've been searching a bit trying to see if this has been discussed before, but didn't find anything. If it does, I apologize.

On a few mangas I've been reading, in most cases finished ones, the final cover introduces some spoilers that while not obvious when you start the series, at some point you realize a twist purely because of the cover you see every time you open the page to the series itself.

Are there any reasons why the final/latest one is used, instead of the first volume?

@BlindLoke Wouldn't the reason be so people know what the latest cover of the said title and how many volume it and or currently have?

Can't you see that information by entering the page of the manga and checking the chapter list? In fact, you get even more info: Chapters that are translated to your languages.
The cover is meaningless if there is no chapters available in your language.

reason is, simply put, chronological order in scanlating the volumes. the covers are updated chronologically as well.

i guess @BlindLoke 's trouble is with the covers containing spoiler. it is an inconvenience for you, i'm sure. but it would create a lot more confusion and dissatisfaction if volume covers were left at vol 1, or if there was a rule stating you can't update volume covers on the title pages.

Well, you can no longer talk about spoilers on the Manga comment section, only on individual chapters.
I don't see why the same logic can't apply to the picture you see in the middle of the screen when entering the title itself, when sometimes the spoilers are really massive.

What sort of confusion and dissatisfaction would it cause? Because I really wanna understand the point you are trying to make, @dokkotak

While I don't think it should necessarily be limited to the first cover, I do think the covers should at the very least be static, at least as a user setting. Some mangas, especially the ones with longer titles, I tend to remember more by the cover that I first saw rather than the name itself

seems logical that folks would want to update covers as they are published / scanlated. just as u argued that it may spoil the storyline for some manga, one can argue it doesn't spoil for a lot of other manga. a rule for all manga where update on covers are forbidden seem arbitrary/overblown, if it's only to prevent any possible spoilers, if any.

and again, covers have been published and scanned, so it's fair game, it should be updated. and i agree with that view. and I'd venture to say that more people would agree with this. and also with the above.

and as far as discussing spoilers goes, aren't there spoiler tags?

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here. (I am being proverbial here, i.e. not abusing an actual animal.)

Alright maybe I'll rephrase it a bit..

So people could easily know what the latest cover of the said title and how many volume it and or currently have?

I mean like in general, the displayed cover is the most noticable is it not? And it's one of the things that's one would definitely see when entering the Manga page (especially on mobile) with the other one being the title.

Also, sometimes uploader or the group that upload doesn't always provide details about what vol. of the chapters they have uploaded.

Example:
AnPbEdr.png

It can bee seen quite easily that this title is at vol 5/vol 5 of this title is available (or so on...)

DN7VQw9.png

But then when you look at the chapters being uploaded, it doesn't show what vol that chapter are from.. Hence, potentially making people doesn't know how many vol is available now.

Edit:
Hey! That display cover is low res man! What the heck?!

I think this has been discussed (and rejected) several times. I wish it wasn't.
The only things I want from MangaDex right now are a way to make the default manga cover the first volume to avoid spoilers. I've no idea how hard it'd be to code this but you could make it a toggle set to off by default and everyone would be happy, I think.
I also want a way to search only for fully scanlated manga. Or maybe just manga who have an "END" chapter uploaded.
