Wrong, saying I took "3 times longer than you" means that you took 3 times as much. It works. He took 30 minutes. 10*3. You'd have to say that he took an EXTRA 3 times longer if you want it to mean 10+10*3. You need the word extra in there to mean what you mean.

3 times more than 10 = 40

The more than signifies that you should add the initial value. So if I have 5 apples and you have three times as many apples you have 15 apples, however if you have three times more apples than me, you have 20 apples.
