Thank you for the translation! Finally we now know Mia's backstory and now it's kind of understandable why she did all this, as she had no place to come back to. But it's surprising that she is already free from the brainwashing even without Kate's help. But how is Mia able to get her sister's name, as she only got her memory back after being struck? And I really hope Kate will tell her that becoming an adult means she will "die". I think that will make her join Kate's side.

"Everytime I got hit, my grades improved." Well shit, no wonder the global IQ is dropping. Turns out we have to beat children, alright fellas grab your "educational stick" - it's time to show north americans that europe and asia can also have "school drama" without needing guns.

Welp, this puts Mia in a whole new light. I thought Sara was the jealous one and Mia got dragged along and developed a grudge alongside her, but it was the other way around. Even the line about "making Sara hit her" flips the apparent dynamic on its head.

Also Mia introduced herself by that name rather than getting named by Sara, so I guess that name was deeply ingrained in her on a subconscious level. Just highlights how the most different names seem to be the most abnormal in some way.

How do I put it? As much as Mia's desires got corrupted and her methods dirtier over timer, there's something admirable about how she refused to let her family's death be in vain, that she won't give up no matter what and refuses to let the world drag her down.

About 1.5 years ago (about when Ch 192 was serialised), I wrote my initial crack theory on Sara and Mia. With regards to Mia's past, aside from my (now mistaken) belief that she hailed from aristocracy (instead of poverty here), I'm amazed at how spot on my read of her was back then!!

Later when Ch 194 came out, from my comments then I quote the following:

That said, it's still possible that she was of noble birth, was spanked as punishment, and she went into the House with the mindset of rising above the ranks. Furthermore, I've read enough stories to know that such claims of "kill" can range from deliberate murders to accidental deaths that one feels guilty for, so I'll keep possibilities open. For all we know, she might've wanted to live a better life by serving the Shadows House, but when an argument broke out, her family accidentally died in the heat of the moment (hit their head on a column or something).
I remain insistent that she's not some mastermind like Kate or Candy. Just a girl who sought a better life, got brainwashed, was living relatively blissfully until the effects recently wore off, and now will guide her "master" in such a way that she can reap better benefits and live more comfortably.
I am so proud that I'm right again!

I wonder how much of this was planned since the beginning, because at the start it just looked like the names were based on S&M.
We've seen throughout the story that Somato-sensei loves their parallels and contrasts, and Mia being one of the first characters introduced likely serves this aspect too. In this case, she contrasts with Emilyko.

If you zoom back out, the two of them have more common than you'd think:
  • both had roots in poverty
  • both of them grew up without love
  • both believed affection has to be won through competence
  • for both of them the Shadows House is the best place they've lived in their whole life
However, their paths diverged and they both walked in different directions. This is what I believed will await them
