That escalation is one of the fastest I've seen without feeling rushed. Really wonder what's been going on with the kids who were still in the children's house.

Also, interesting one of the third floor Shadows seems equally aware of the Great Grandfather's tendency to agree to the last thing said. This chapter makes me wonder just how aware the Great Grandfather is...

Are those shadows in the back soot creations or did Anthony lead the charge with a bunch of naked children?

In the panel where Great-Grandfather says "The children shall all be disposed of", he does look transparent: you can see through his veil(?) to the collar of his cloak and the room behind. I don't know what to make of that, but I don't think we've seen anything like that from a shadow before. So, the Great-Grandfather is weird in more than one way.....

I think you're right about the 3rd floor: as of this chapter, I don't think we've gotten ANY real background information about them, and barely more than the sketchiest of characterization to tell us what they're up to, how they think, etc. If they appeared at all in any flashbacks, I must have blinked and missed it.

The original attack on the Mirror family is also pretty mysterious: everything seemed to be going OK between the Mirrors and Shadows, until suddenly it wasn't and the Shadows were running amok. The possibility was left open that Josef might have been responsible, since he worked so closely with the Shadows before the revolt, and he certainly seemed to fit the villain part, until he began working with the children - we never got his side of the story, though, that I can recall.

I haven't seen anything from the chapters ahead, but something tells me we're just about due for Josef to fill in some of the blanks about the Shadows, their revolt, how the Great-Grandfather fits into everything, and how the current power structure got established, from Josef's point of view.

While I'm thinking of it, I'm sure I mentioned it before, but we haven't got a whole lot of background about Edward and his friends Gerald and Eileen, either - I was surprised to see the detail that Gerald was one of the original members of the Research Team, but that's just about everything I can think of that we know about these characters' past.

Based on the way characters who seem to be villains develop through the story, and the fact that these three do not seem to be all that bad once they're away from the influence of the Shadows House, I think we'll probably find that Edward and his friends aren't quite the villains they've seemed to be, and we'll probably find out that Edward has simply been doing whatever he thought he needed to do to keep himself and his friends safe (they seem pretty close), so we're due, I think, for a flashback from Edward's point of view eventually, but for now, anything might be possible for the adult characters!
