This just mames me curious about what the hood guy is. Is he a shadow with full autonomy and no face, or do him and his face share a body but keep seperate personalities instead of merging.

Hm,I really wish they would have shown Ram as a faceless doll sometime in the story instead of just telling us straight away that she would be repurposed as one. That felt way too much as needless exposition.

I don't think this is that similar to TPN. I understand the comparison — young kids being manipulated by the people they trust — but there's a lot of differences between the stories. TPN is focused on strategy and outmaneuvering your foes, while Shadows is more about the relationship between faces and the shadows they serve.

Moreover, there's no talk of escape in this series like was a constant theme in TPN and this story is more fantastic than the real-word-idealogy-rooyed TPN. The characters are also more grounded (i.e. not geniuses), while the world building is more fleshed out in TPN.

I really love both series, but I get a very different experience reading them. All that being said, really hoping this series doesn't go downhill in the last few arcs like TPN did.

So unless I'm misunderstanding something, this is the way everything works:
The shadows are originally small non-sapient soot creatures, not unlike the clingers. These mimics/morphs are probably normally harmless.

Through Grandfather's multi-phase process, the mimics are made to mimic a human (or living doll), form a sense of self, develop the ability to control soot, and finally take over the human they mimic, becoming a complete being, but with soot powers. We see an example of a living doll being taken over by a clinger, where it gets inside them and takes control. Presumably the result of that isn't the same as it would be for a proper shadow.

Things that aren't clear:
What is Grandfather's purpose for all of this? Sure, making superhumans, but to what end? Are they actually nobles in some kingdom? Do they rule the world? Are they planning to?

What is Grandfather? Is he simply the first of his kind, created by chance? Or is he not a proper shadow-sama at all, but simply a soot ghost that hung around long enough to become intelligent?

Speaking of ghosts, what are they? And clingers, too. Originally they were said to be the bad emotions of the shadows given form, but that was when we didn't know much about anything. I doubt these are a natural occurrence that would happen when the mimics are in their natural habitat, wherever that is. Maybe they are morphlings, offspring of shadows.

Also, I bet that Ram's outrageous memory will allow her to remember some things after her brainwashing. Most likely Emilyko will see a "doll that doesn't show their face" talking to their own finger and realize it's Ram.

interesting...!! i dont think its a given yet that the living dolls are human (i kind of hope they're not, i love stories with both magic and robots). i wonder if kate was avoiding direct contact bc she knew it would distort their personalities in some way?...
