I wonder if the authors can manage to make us like Edward and his retainers at some point in the manga... that’d be no easy feat. He is so hell bent on getting Kate disposed off but he has every reason too, as she really is a dissident although he shouldn’t be so sure of it. He is a good antagonist so far, smart and charismatic. I fear that he could really hurt children but on the other hand, being such a formidable opponent, going up against him will only help our heros mature and grow.

It's interesting to me that it's this point when we learn soot production is purely a job for the children of the manor. So presumably the fact that 'barbara cannot become an adult' because of her injury is just an excuse to keep her there. Is producing soot for consumption below the adults...? Or is soot production on that scale not something that happens the same way once you've 'Unified'?

Either way, it makes you realize that the childrens house is kind of a production farm.... all the cleaning and soot collection for this purpose....

Soot is the source of their powers: the ones that produce more soot are more powerful, and after producing a lot of soot they are weakened. My guess is that adults have better control on the soot, hence why they are more powerful and no longer spontaneously emit soot. In theory they could produce soot for energy, but that would mean weaken themselves.
