Peking Man is a subspecies of Homo erectus discovered in China and originally mistaken as a new species in 1927. It's very politically loaded, since it was used as evidence that humanity was born in China. It was even believed later that it was the direct ancestor of East Asian people, who would've thus have evolved independently from African and European people. I believe that there's still pseudoscientists spousing such beliefs, but they were still relatively common (or at least people heard the name and had no clue what they were talking about) at the time this manga was published.
