This was so annoying in the novel as well. He had all the time in the world to talk about it with Cai'er, but instead he chose to basically betray her by not explaining his obligation to her beforehand. And he's supposed to be the most shining example of a knight and deeply in love with Cai'er. Sometimes authors get an idea for extra drama, but then can't figure out how to pull it off believably. In such a case they should drop it. Yet against all better judgement they can't let go of the idea they love so much, so they force it through with brute force, regardless of how idiotic it will look like in the story.
