Probably just an excuse for the powers in charge. Historically society has tried to keep thing related to female sexuality banned or censored as a tactic to uphold the status quo. The more ignorant and unaware people are, the easier it is to uphold outdated puritanical moral values and justify unequal treatment.

Also, the more young women actually know about childbirth, the less likely they’d want to go through it themselves. If your society primarily values women as baby-making factories, it would be in your best interest to keep them in the dark.
