At least he tried man, to be fair without Izumi that little girl was probably gonna actually die, so it definitely came out as a positive that he almost died instead.

You know, Izumi is like the Anti-Takeo Gouda (Ore Monogatari). Whereas Takeo is strong, athletic, super lucky, and capable of almost everything he sets his mind to (aside from cooking and academics), Izumi is weak, nonathletic, super unlucky, and incapable of doing almost everything he sets his mind to (aside from cooking and academics). They're, however, both super dense. Can't change too much with your romantic leads, am I right?
Don't take this as an insult to Izumi. Just an observation I had after comparing Izumi's attempt to saving a drowning kid to Takeo's rescue of a drowning child.
